The Insider Austin Food Guide
Friends and Family keep stopping by Austin and I invariably give them the same recommendations every single time. So here’s a little list of my go-to places when it comes to food in Austin.
Here’s the thing, this is my list. You’re going to disagree. If you have your own thought’s, leave them in the comments below. Better yet, go create your own list.
Granny’s Tacos – Breakfast Tacos
If you’re in Austin, you’re destined to try some breakfast tacos. While each austinite has their favorite, Granny’s takes the cake. The truck is a little mom and pop shop that I have quite the infinity for with a classic but quality take on tacos.
My Picks: Migas (ask for ranchero without Chicharrón) or bean, egg, and cheese
Patrizi’s – Italian
Maybe it’s the Chicagoan in me, but every once in a while I need good plate of Pasta to fill me up. Patrizi’s hit’s the spot. It’s simple and light, instead of the typical heavy creamy dishes you get at most places.
My Pick: Cacio e Pepe
ThaiFresh – Thai
I hated Thai food growing up, ThaiFresh changed that. The freshness of their ingredients and the spices used in each dish have won me over. If you’re a fan of Thai food, ThaiFresh is a must.
My Picks: Green Curry with Tofu and Sweet Potato
Blenders and Bowls – Acai Bowl
Growing up a suburban kid, I never knew what an Acai bowl was. When I moved to Austin it seemed to be all the rage. Essentially it’s a berry smoothie covered in toppings. But that description doesn’t do it justice. If you’ve never tried an Acai Bowl, do yourself the service and try out Blenders and Bowls.
Torchy’s – Queso
The first meal I had in texas, aside from a muffin at the hotel, was at Torchys. To this day, their queso holds the high water mark for good queso.
My Picks: Queso
Mi Madre’s – Coffee
I don’t drink coffee, but when I do it’s at Mi Madres. Their coffee is just incredibly rich with complex set of flavors. It’s almost like if you made a coffee/cinnamon/hot chocolate blend.
My Pick: Café de Olla
